Domestic tourism, key driver for the economic and social development of Colombia

The most recent Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey revealed that during the fourth quarter of 2023, nearly 1.7 million Colombians engaged in domestic tourism, which was 26% higher, compared to the same period in 2022. Likewise, said The study revealed that the average expense was almost $138,000, that is, 3% higher than that recorded during the same months of 2022. 

“Despite this growth, this index is 6% below pre-pandemic levels, so It is important to continue betting on actions that contribute to stimulating demand and that in turn generate employment and sustainable progress, in addition to improving the quality of life of the communities,” explained Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of ANATO. 

In this initiative, Travel Agencies become a key piece, which have shown important recoveries in their main indices, since based on the Monthly Survey of Travel Agencies, in January 2024 their nominal income grew 4.3% ; Employed personnel increased by 5.3% and the average nominal salary increased by 8%.

“Although the employed personnel continue to constantly recover, they also continue to be 33% below the data obtained pre-pandemic, at the end of 2023,” said the union leader. 

And she added: “We often forget that in Colombia we have great treasures to discover, exotic destinations and communities from which to learn history and tradition. And domestic tourism not only allows this, it is also a fundamental pillar for the economic and social progress of our country.
