Avianca reduced its carbon emissions by 21% in 2023 compared to 2019

This achievement is added to the 26% reduction in emissions per passenger transported compared to its operation in 2019

As part of Earth Day, Avianca announced that, in 2023, it will reduce its absolute emissions by 21% compared to 2019, transporting 5% more passengers. These emissions refer to the total emissions produced when flying an airplane.

In addition, the airline also managed to reduce emissions per passenger transported by 26% compared to its operation in 2019. These differ from the previous ones because the result is obtained by comparing the emissions produced against the number of people transported on a plane, which which makes it an indicator of efficiency.

“The 21% reduction in absolute emissions is proof that our business model works and that we are fulfilling the promise of providing access so that more people can use the plane as a means of transportation without neglecting our environmental impact and the commitment that we we have with the environments where we operate. More people flew with Avianca, with fewer absolute emissions and per passenger transported, which represents a conscious and responsible growth plan, without affecting the operational efficiency and connectivity we provide,” said Andrés Muñoz, Avianca Environmental Management Manager.

These two results have been achieved with the implementation of a business model focused on providing more access and strengthening its connectivity, while generating a lower environmental impact, through, among other aspects, more point-to-point routes; the reconfiguration of the fleet, which has facilitated the reduction of emissions per passenger transported; the implementation of the Avianca Fuel program, which has avoided the emission of 71,256 tons of CO2; and the incorporation of A320NEO aircraft which, according to its manufacturer, reduces emissions compared to the previous generation fleet.

To complement the reduction of emissions, Avianca also has compensation initiatives. In this way, through support for restoration and reforestation projects in the region, the compensation of 695,000 tons of CO2 was generated in 2023.
