Joel Santos, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic, affirmed that this event is a valuable contribution to the international promotion of the country


The National Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) brings together the local tourism industry in the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE). The event was created to provide a commercial exchange organized professionally where international wholesalers, tour operators, incentive groups, airlines and charters (buyers) can meet and conduct business with the main tourism providers of the Dominican Republic.
Buyers will have the opportunity to meet, at their discretion, with more than 150 different suppliers of Dominican tourism products and services.
Buyers and suppliers receive a Directory of DATE delegates, which includes marketing information and products of all participants. Once received, the Buyer's delegates review the information about the Suppliers and request appointments with the Suppliers they wish to comply with. While Suppliers may request meetings with Buyers, it is not necessary for Buyers to meet with them unless they wish to do so. The meetings are organized in advance through the coincidence of the computer or at the event during the programming sessions.
The meetings are held for 20 minutes each, and are held on a one-to-one basis. During this meeting or before DATE, buyers can also request on-site visits.
DATE is an excellent opportunity for buyers to conduct annual negotiations efficiently, as well as to have the opportunity to see first-hand the business environment to travel in the Dominican Republic and / or see properties personally. Suppliers have the opportunity to meet with several buyers and demonstrate their travel advantages.

Joel Santos, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES), said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE), that this event is a valuable contribution to the international promotion of the country as a tourist destination and in its 19 years it has had an important contribution to the growth of the sector.
Santos said that this trade event brings together companies that handle more than 60% of Dominican tourism and more than 200 delegates from companies from the main markets.
Santos explained that this edition of DATE involves 590 international delegates and local companies, 28 international media, more than 100 hotels and service companies and 125 spaces occupied in the exhibition areas.
"For Asonahores and Dominican tourism companies this appointment with our partners in the different markets is of great interest, since a significant proportion of our sales is decided on DATE," said the president of Asonahores.
The official assured that a sample of the positive march of tourism is the enthusiasm that every year is evident in those who participate in DATE, both local companies, international guests, authorities and media.
The leader of Asonahores stressed that in the first quarter of 2018 there were 1.7 million tourists, a 7.7% growth, and 85.7% occupancy.
While in 2017 the country received 6.1 million tourists by air and more than 19 thousand by sea.
"Arrivals grew by 4.3%, with about 250 thousand tourists more than in 2016. In 2017, we also received 1.1 million cruise passengers, an increase of 37%," explained Santos.
He indicated that last year 2,054 rooms were added to the hotel offer to complete 77,259, and that despite this increase, the country achieved an occupation of 77%.
He said that in 2017, 6,712 rooms were renovated in the country, and in the case of Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, 100% of the Emotion hotels, acquired by the Dominican chain Hodelpa, and the Atmosphera, opened as adults only, were renovated. Dominican group Victoria Resorts.
He added that the Puerto Plata Village hotels and the Gran Paradise Playa Dorada, this property of the local company Amhsa Marina, were also partially renovated. In addition, the Spanish chain SENATOR acquired a complex with 1,600 rooms and began its renovation.

He also cited the inauguration of the beach club as a positive advancement in tourism and began the construction of the first hotel in the new Puntarena complex, developed by Grupo Puntacana in Baní.
"In Punta Cana, at this moment 6 hotels are being built and two were expanded, so we will have 5,213 new rooms. In addition, 10 hotels were renovated: Sirenis, Palladium, Natura, Sunscape Cortecito, Vista Sol Cortecito, Barceló Occidental, Vik Arena Blanca, Dreams Uvero Alto and Excellence Uvero Alto, "he explained.
Santos also referred to the growth of the complementary offer, especially golf tourism and health tourism, which ensured in this line the country has international certification and hotel rooms equipped for this service.
During the opening ceremony of DATE 2018, the companies Air Europa, Nexus Receptive Turoperador, Apple International Group International Tour Operator and Expedia Travel Agency were recognized for their contribution to the development of Dominican tourism.
On behalf of the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García, Deputy Minister Fausto Fernandez spoke and stressed the importance of DATE and the contribution it gives to the national tourism industry.
