Quito celebrates its 40th anniversary of being declared as cultural heritage of humanity
The realization of this event is a springboard that drives various tourist, cultural and economic activities
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Quito as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity declared by UNESCO, -a place from which to lead a new struggle against time - and before any other place, it was awarded to our city in 1978. The fight against time is never simple, however, Quito of those times did not have to be more than it was to impress.
The naturalness with which the people of Quito lived together and continue to live with that heritage today, has made this city an unquestionable example of what, for that UNESCO commission, expressed with those words: Quito was a Historic Center par excellence.
The week of August 8 to 12, the festivities will be held with the great event called The Festival of Light, which seeks to highlight the heritage and artistic innovation and for the third consecutive year is hosted by the Historic Center Quito.
The celebration held in 2017 attracted approximately 2 million people, being the program that generates a social activation and an economic outflow "out of season".
This festival links the light art program in the public space. The lights and the impressive architecture of the capital of Ecuador, are the protagonists tonight. The iconic buildings will be dressed with unprecedented artistic and creative lighting that has placed the festival as a unique experience of appreciation and contemplation in previous editions. The sensory and playful experience gives a new meaning to the perception of the city, it is also an opportunity for people to discover a new perspective and reconnect with the history of their community.
Both the plaza and the facade of San Francisco, the interior of the church of La Compañia de Jesús, the Galápagos street (known as "La Guaragua") and the Arco de la Reina, will be the novelties to be discovered in this third edition of La Fiesta de la Luz, within the total of 18 spaces intervened.
The aim is to create a space for training, innovation, debate and questioning with the help of workshops, visual exhibitions and talks with national and international artists.
In addition to the cultural promotion, events of this kind benefit hotels, restaurants and cafeterias that attend visitors with special schedules and seasonal prices higher than normal.
The realization of this event is a springboard that drives various tourist, cultural and economic activities to be projected worldwide. During a whole year the preparations for this celebration are made, thanks to the work of the Ministry of Culture of Quito in cooperation with the Fête des Lumières of Lyon that contributes an increase in the quality of the event given its experience. The call for artists and managers received 135 projects through the portal quitocultura.info, from which 12 lucky artists were selected and which tripled the participation of the previous year.
