President of Guatemala inaugurates XI National Congress of Tourism

Increase in air connectivity, increase in tourism indices and continuity of policies were advances highlighted by President Jimmy Morales

 


Accompanied by Vice President Jafeth Cabrera, the president stressed that to make a tourist destination it is necessary to "speak well of the place", in order to attract visitors. Regarding the improvement of air connectivity, he indicated that aerodromes have been rejuvenated, such as Flores and Puerto Barrios, and very soon awaits that of Puerto San José, "to connect our beaches in less than an hour".

The president said that "we have given independence to Inguat and so we ask for results", while noting that in the last two years have increased tourism rates by 18%, thanks to various projects, which mentioned the installation of docks in Panajachel and rehabilitation of roads to tourist destinations: "Soon we will deliver seven finished projects of asphalt replacement and we have 60 more on the way".

He recalled that, in 2015, the Government of Guatemala proposed a policy of sustainable tourism and his administration committed to giving continuity, perfecting the instrument and delivering successful results, which are reflected in the statistical indicators.

In addition to reiterating the call to national unity, he highlighted the direction taken by his Government in five areas proposed from the beginning: education, health, security, transparency and economic development. The latter considers tourism as one of its main sources, since it generates employment at all productive and economic levels.

Jorge Mario Chajón, director of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute -Inguat-, thanked the president for his vision and support for the tourism industry, "motor of human and economic development", while Fernando Olivera Rocha, Secretary of Tourism of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico , recognized the courage of his administration, to resume and implement a 2015 plan.

The event will last two days and focuses on conducting simultaneous workshops of segments and specialized tourism products, such as language, health and wellness, adventure, destination weddings and honeymoons, which will be facilitated by international experts. Within the framework of this congress, the II Hospitality and Tourism Suppliers Fair is also held.
