Air transport in the Dominican Republic grows 4.9% during the first semester
In the period January - June, a total of 7,571,107 passengers were mobilized by the airport terminals of the country
The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) released the preliminary figures of the Statistical Report on Aero-commercial Transportation of the Dominican Republic corresponding to the first semester of 2018, of which we had already published exclusively on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
The aforementioned Report indicated by the JAC, indicates that in the period January - June, a total of 7,571,107 passengers were mobilized by the airport terminals of the country in entry and exit operations, representing an absolute growth of 352,386 people and relative of 4.9% respect to the same period of 2017.
89% of the passengers transported, some 6,758,318, moved on regular flights and only 812,789 people did so through charter operations. In this regard, the report highlights the 7% increase in passenger movement in the regular modality compared to 2017, due to the regularization of the operations of some charter airlines.
The President of the Board of Civil Aviation, Lic. Luis Ernesto Camilo, expressed his satisfaction at noting that "each of the months of this first semester recorded positive numbers", highlighting the month of March with a growth of 9.4%, transporting the record figure of 1,401,846 passengers by air.
Other figures from the statistical report of the JAC indicate that a total of 594 air routes were operated during the period January - June, as well as three new airlines entered the Dominican air commercial sector.
As for the routes with the highest passenger traffic, during the first semester of 2018, New York / Las Americas JFPG and New York / Del Cibao stand out, each of them mobilizing 456,184 and 452,769 passengers, respectively.
Of the seven airports with commercial operations in the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana concentrated 55.83% of the total passengers transported; the remaining six airports reported a total of 3.3 million people in the period January - June 2018. The terminals of Catey (Samaná) and Higüero (Santo Domingo), reported the highest levels of relative growth with 20 and 25% each one.
Regarding the regional concentration of airport terminals, the JAC statistics show that US airlines dominate in Punta Cana, Las Americas JFPG and Cibao, while in the airports of Puerto Plata and Samaná the Canadian ones predominate, the Italian ones in La Romana and the Dominicans in the Higüero.
Finally, in terms of aircraft movement, the January - June semester recorded a growth of 916 flights compared to the same period in 2017, totaling 54,441 air operations.
