Where the earth breathes water and life pulses in every direction, Brazil’s Pantanal takes centre stage in a remarkable journey. In an unprecedented initiative, Embratur, the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, and Sebrae Nacional commissioned National Geographic CreativeWorks to bring this unique biome to the attention of the world.
One of the most prestigious media and storytelling outlets in the world for nature and travel, National Geographic CreativeWorks was commissioned by Embratur to embark on a mission to capture the vast natural and cultural richness of the Northern and Southern Pantanal — through the lens of all five senses.
Titled “Safari for the Senses”, the project invites travellers worldwide to immerse themselves in the sensorial experience of the Pantanal. Renowned National Geographic wildlife photographer, Filipe DeAndrade, will traverse untouched landscapes, winding rivers, flooded plains, and historic ranches to create inspiring visual and audiovisual content. This material will be published across National Geographic’s media platforms, positioning Brazil as a destination for unparalleled nature and authentic experiences.
“The Pantanal offers a one-of-a-kind sensory experience, where nature and culture intertwine like few places on Earth. This collaboration with National Geographic CreativeWorks will show the world one of Brazil’s greatest treasures, strengthening our country’s image as a destination for nature, culture, and sustainability. The Pantanal is a World Heritage site — we are privileged to protect and share it. Our goal is to inspire purposeful travel, evoke emotional connections with the wild beauty of the region, and foster appreciation for preserving what is most precious”, says Marcelo Freixo, President of Embratur/Visit Brasil.
"Through Safari for the senses, this campaign will bring out the natural wonders of Brazil in a way that resonates deeply with our global audience", said Nadine Heggie, Vice President of Media Partnerships at National Geographic. “We’re delighted to collaborate with Embratur to spotlight one of the world’s most remarkable ecosystems through the lens of storytelling and immersive photography".
Collaborating with National Geographic CreativeWorks, and gaining access to National Geographic’s media platforms and their audiences is a strategic move aligned with Embratur’s objective of positioning Brazil as a global leader in sustainable and experiential tourism.
To carry out the project, Embratur partnered with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) and the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.
THE LAND OF THE JAGUAR
The Pantanal is home to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in the Americas, including iconic species such as the jaguar, hyacinth macaw, giant anteater, and marsh deer. It is estimated that the biome hosts more than 4,700 species of animals and plants, including birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
Recognised by UNESCO as both a Biosphere Reserve and World Natural Heritage Site, the world’s largest tropical wetland spans across the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, covering roughly 250,000 square kilometres.
In addition to its ecological significance, the Pantanal is a cultural mosaic shaped by riverside, Indigenous, and traditional Pantanal communities that live in harmony with nature. Its ever-changing landscapes — shaped by cycles of flooding and drought — offer a visual spectacle that invites contemplation, adventure, and sustainable tourism.
Offering unforgettable opportunities for immersion in its rich biodiversity and cultural authenticity, the Pantanal is increasingly established as one of the world’s most extraordinary ecotourism destinations.
THE “SAFARI FOR THE SENSES” EXPERIENCE
Every step of the “Safari for the Senses” seeks to transform into an image that can only be felt when physically present. The golden light filtering through the mist above the water, the piercing stare of a jaguar in the bush, the choreographed flight of macaws. The sound of wind dancing through the grass, a rancher’s whistle, or the eloquent silence of flooded dawns. The scent of fresh earth after rain, of wood smoke curling from the grill, of fruit picked straight from the land. The taste of freshly caught fish grilled by the river, the comforting flavours of a traditional Pantanal breakfast. The texture of sun-worn leather, handcrafted local textiles, and the warmth of the sun on your skin at the end of the day.
The itinerary includes iconic locations in the Northern Pantanal (Mato Grosso), such as the legendary Transpantaneira Highway, the breathtaking scenery of Barão de Melgaço, and the majestic Encontro das Águas State Park. The journey continues southward to Mato Grosso do Sul, highlighting Pantanal culture, community-led conservation initiatives, and the preserved wilderness of the Serra do Amolar.
PROJECT OUTCOMES
The journey will result in two exclusive photo galleries for the National Geographic website, a series of Instagram posts featuring the best images with captions written by the photographer, and a collection of immersive Reels capturing the complete sensory experience of the “Safari for the Senses.” The content will also highlight local hospitality, Pantanal cuisine, and the region’s harmonious relationship between people and nature.
Additionally, the project will be featured in National Geographic’s Destination Guides, with a special section and dedicated link highlighting Brazil and the Pantanal — further expanding the campaign’s global reach.
More than just a trip, this mission is an invitation to awaken the senses and reconnect with the natural world. The Pantanal won’t just be seen — it will be felt, lived, and savoured. And through the storytelling of National Geographic CreativeWorks, Brazil will be revealed to the world with the depth and beauty only nature can truly express.
