Regenerative tourism: the new way of traveling that transforms destinations

More and more travelers are adopting practices that seek not only to reduce the impact of their vacations, but also to leave a positive mark on communities and ecosystems

Regenerative tourism is emerging as a key trend in the travel industry. Unlike conventional tourism, which often leaves negative impacts on ecosystems and societies, this model proposes that each visitor not only reduces their impact but also contributes to revitalizing and improving the places they visit.

According to figures from UN Tourism, 1.4 billion international arrivals were reached in 2024, consolidating the post-pandemic recovery. In this context, Mexico ranked as the sixth most visited country in the world, with 45 million visitors, 7.4% more than in 2023, according to the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR). While tourism is a global economic driver, it also poses environmental challenges: it is estimated to generate around 8% of greenhouse gas emissions and can cause pollution, ecosystem deterioration, and pressure on natural resources.

Environmental organizations warn of the suffering of more than 550,000 animals due to tourism practices such as elephant rides, dolphin shows, and cat photography. Furthermore, plastic waste on beaches and in the ocean continues to seriously impact species and habitats.

In this context, IATI Seguros launched the Travel Shakers movement, with the aim of promoting regenerative and conscious tourism. The initiative seeks to engage travelers in the active participation of conservation, restoration, and enrichment of natural and cultural spaces. Being a responsible traveler doesn't mean stopping exploring, but rather doing so in an informed, empathetic, and respectful manner, understanding that every decision has a real impact.

IATI Seguros recommends six steps to join regenerative tourism:

Get informed before booking, avoiding activities that involve animal abuse or environmental damage.

Do not support experiences that use animals as entertainment.

Promote local tourism by choosing small accommodations, purchasing authentic handicrafts, and shopping at local businesses.

Respect natural environments and minimize the use of plastics.

Be responsible with what you share on social media, avoiding promoting harmful practices.

Choose fewer destinations, but with greater connection and depth in each experience.

For the company, these small steps make a big difference and reinforce the idea that responsible travel is no longer a passing trend, but a necessity to protect the planet and its diversity.

IATI Seguros, with over 130 years of experience protecting travelers, has established itself as one of the leading insurance brokerages specializing in travel insurance.
