Mexican Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora reported that from January to July 2025, the country's museums registered 6.8 million visitors, representing a 19.3 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024 and a 2.8 percent increase compared to 2019.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) explained that, according to information from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), 89 percent of visitors were nationals and 11 percent were foreigners.
"Museums and archaeological sites have a close relationship with cultural and archaeological tourism. In addition to preserving and disseminating the country's historical and cultural heritage, they boost the local economy through visitor spending, job creation, and the strengthening of cultural identity," he stated.
He specified that the museums with the highest visitor numbers between January and July 2025 were the National Museum of Anthropology, with 45 percent; the National Museum of History, with 23 percent; and the Templo Mayor Museum, with 4 percent, which together totaled 4.9 million visits.
Rodríguez Zamora also announced that during the first seven months of the year, the country's archaeological sites received 6 million visitors, 63 percent of whom were national and 37 percent foreign, representing a 3.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
He detailed that the most visited archaeological sites from January to July 2025 were: Chichén Itzá, with 1.4 million visitors; Teotihuacán with its Site Museum, with 995,000 visitors; and Tulum with 93,000 visitors, which together represent 51 percent of the total number of visitors to these sites.
"These spaces, in addition to promoting sustainable development and fostering a greater appreciation for history by offering unique experiences to both nationals and foreigners, also boost tourism as a generator of social and economic well-being, consistent with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's mandate, so that the benefits of the good news sector permeate all members of the great value chain," he concluded.
