Cancún.- The State Secretariat of Tourism (SEDETUR) reported that the closing of the 2025 summer season yielded favorable results for the industry, consolidating Quintana Roo as a leading destination in Mexico and an international benchmark. Collection of the Lodging Tax exceeded 2.434 billion pesos , representing a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This progress is attributed to the efforts promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa under the New Era of Tourism, as well as the joint commitment of authorities and the private sector. Bernardo Cueto Riestra , head of SEDETUR , emphasized that the professionalization of service providers and the formalization of tourism operations have been key factors.

In terms of employment, the state registered 528,357 IMSS members in July , reflecting the recovery and expansion of employment. International passenger flows also maintain an upward trend: the monthly average of foreign passenger arrivals in the first half of the year was 907,000 , surpassing the 859,000 expected in 2024.

During 2024, Quintana Roo received 18.5 million national and international arrivals , which represented a 4% growth compared to 2023. Between January and May 2025 alone, 8.5 million arrivals were recorded , equivalent to 41.8% of the country's tourist flows.

Cancún International Airport continues to lead the way in air traffic, with 10.17 million arrivals in 2024, nearly a third of the national total. In the first five months of 2025, it received 4.5 million international passengers , 33.8% of Mexico's total. In the maritime sector, Cozumel and Mahahual account for more than 70% of the country's cruise passengers, with more than 4.4 million visitors from January to July 2025.

In terms of issuing markets, the United States leads with a 37.8% share, followed by Canada (13.9%), the United Kingdom and Argentina (2% each), and France (1.3%).

The official noted that the establishment of a Working Group in 2024 allowed for improvements at Cancún International Airport, such as new signage, free Wi-Fi at immigration offices, National Guard operations, elimination of improper practices at customs, training for INM personnel, and optimization of E-Gates, reducing the number of denied entry by 95%.

On the southern border, the Belizean market generates an estimated 50 to 75 million pesos per month , equivalent to 30% of the capital's business income. In 2024, 556,527 visitors from Belize were registered, and efforts are currently underway to facilitate immigration procedures, promote longer stays, and publicize the benefits of the Regional Visitor Card (RVC) .
