Costa Rica has taken a firm step toward diversifying its tourism with the Digital Nomad Program, an initiative inviting international professionals to live, work, and explore in the land of pura vida. The program extends the tourist visa from 90 days to a full year, with the possibility of renewal, and adds competitive advantages that make the country an attractive long-stay destination for remote workers.

Benefits include income tax exemption, the ability to open domestic bank accounts, recognition of driver's licenses from their home country, and exemption from customs duties on electronic equipment related to teleworking. Furthermore, the program provides legal certainty: digital nomads are not considered residents for tax purposes and have a specific immigration category for remote workers.

The program's tourism offerings complement the program's appeal: a variety of accommodations, cuisine, transportation, and professional guides in all regions of the country, along with a focus on sustainable, safe, and uncrowded tourism. Air connectivity, a favorable time zone, climate, and social stability reinforce Costa Rica's position as a teleworking hub in the region.

According to a study by InsureMyTrip, Costa Rica is among the top ten destinations for digital nomads in the world, thanks to a model that combines well-being, nature, and professionalism in the provision of tourism services.

Regarding the requirements, applicants must demonstrate monthly income, present bank statements or accounting certifications, have a valid passport, and pay the corresponding government fee. The application can be completed online or in person at the General Directorate of Immigration.

With this initiative, Costa Rica not only opens its doors to a growing segment, but also strengthens its vision of quality tourism over mass tourism, promoting extended stays that positively impact the local economy and communities.
