How is Antigua and Barbuda adapting to new travel trends?

First, we created a digital entry platform that not only records who arrives and where they're coming from, but also where they're staying. It includes optional questions that help us understand why they chose Antigua and what they're looking for when visiting. Since the pandemic, we've noticed a shift: travelers prefer short-term, Airbnb-style accommodations in local communities. They're no longer traveling just for sun and sand; they're looking for cultural, culinary, and authentic experiences.

How does Antigua and Barbuda use technology to diversify its tourism offering?

The pandemic also increased demand for luxury properties. High-end visitors are less sensitive to airfare and tend to spend more on restaurants, tours, and experiences. They are also more resilient to disruptions, such as lockdowns in key markets like the United States.

What actions are being taken in sustainability and environmental protection?

We work closely with the environmental department. Some tourists want to enjoy nature: birdwatching, reef diving. That's why we have two reef restoration projects and are marking seabeds to prevent damage from yachts. We also restore wetlands, always seeking to preserve the ecosystem.

How do you involve communities in tourism growth?

It's vital that communities feel part of the tourism product. Before any investment, we hold meetings to showcase the benefits and receive feedback. We also develop tours that allow visitors to interact with the community, so they experience direct benefits and don't view tourism as an invasion.

What's new in air and sea connectivity?

In cruises, we signed an agreement with Global Ports Holdings, the world's largest operator, which brings investment, professionalism, and negotiating power with cruise lines. In aviation, we opened Barbuda International Airport, designed for private flights and high-end tourism. We are also refurbishing the main runway in Antigua (BC Bird), an investment of approximately $50 million.

How do you see the future of tourism in Antigua and Barbuda in the next 5 to 10 years?

I hope that Antigua and Barbuda, along with other islands, will consolidate a common effort under the Caribbean Tourism Organization, speaking and acting as a regional bloc. We want to strengthen connectivity, the luxury experience, and sustainability, positioning ourselves as leaders in the Caribbean.
