Brazil reached a new milestone in the 2025/2026 Blue Flag Program season, obtaining a total of 60 certifications —11 more than the previous year— distributed among 50 beaches and 10 marinas throughout the country. The achievement reaffirms its regional leadership in environmental certifications for coastal tourism destinations.
The progress has been steady: in 2023, the country had 31 recognized beaches; in 2024 there were 38, and this year the number reached 50, all distinguished for their commitment to environmental preservation and responsible tourism.
The award, granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is one of the most prestigious in the world in its category. It recognizes beaches and marinas that meet rigorous criteria in water quality, environmental management, safety, infrastructure, and education. In Brazil, the program is coordinated by the Instituto Ambientes em Rede (IAR).
The official award ceremony will take place next October 31 at the Clube Náutico de Santos, in Guarujá (São Paulo). For Brazilian authorities, the result reflects not only the commitment to sustainability but also the strengthening of the country’s image as an international tourism destination.
According to Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur, the “Sun and Beach” segment is strategic in Brazil’s international promotion. “This recognition shows that the country is a symbol of environmental excellence and reinforces tourists’ confidence in our destinations. Having 60 certified beaches and marinas aligns us with global sustainability goals,” he said.
The impact of the program is also linked to international discussions on coastal management, such as those that will be addressed at the upcoming UN COP30, to be held in November in Belém, state of Pará.
Santa Catarina leads the ranking
Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, leads the national list with 31 certified sites, followed by Rio de Janeiro (19), Bahia (5), São Paulo (4), and Alagoas (1). The municipalities of São Francisco do Sul and Bombinhas, both in Santa Catarina, stand out as the only ones in the country with five award-winning beaches each. São Francisco do Sul also adds an award-winning marina.
The season also includes new candidates, among them:
José Gonçalves (Armação de Búzios, RJ): located in an environmental protection area, it is ideal for surfing and hiking through the Atlantic forest.
Foguete Beach (Cabo Frio, RJ): with white sand and open sea, it stands out for its tranquility and is perfect for families and those seeking relaxation.
Vermelha Beach (Penha, SC): surrounded by forested hills, it attracts surfers and offers paragliding flights during the high season.
Molhes do Atalaia Beach (Itajaí, SC): with consistent waves and easy access, it offers panoramic views from the hills that surround it.
