The Green Pavilion at La Rural became a window to the Caribbean during Meet in Paradise , an unprecedented gathering that brought together more than 1,500 tourism professionals and specialized media representatives from across South America. Organized by the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Tourism, the event featured an intense agenda of conferences, sensory experiences, and networking opportunities that reflected the essence, diversity, and potential of the Caribbean's leading destination.

In this context, the Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, spoke with Travel2latam about the industry's progress, connectivity challenges, and the commitment to sustainability as the cornerstone of tourism growth by 2025.

Minister, how do you assess the performance of Dominican tourism so far in 2025?

This year has been extraordinary for the Dominican Republic. We are closing with record numbers: between 11.6 and 11.8 million visitors, which represents almost two million more than last year and 50% above 2019 levels. This consolidates our country's position as a tourism leader in the Caribbean.

What role has the Argentine and Southern Cone markets played in this growth?

It has been fundamental. The growth of Dominican tourism in 2025 is largely supported by Argentina and the entire Southern Cone. Argentina arrived at a key moment, and its contribution has been decisive. We estimate that half a million Argentines will visit us this year, an increase of more than 80% compared to the previous year.

What factors explain this strong connection with the South American market?

We share a similar language, culture, and way of life. When an Argentinian, Chilean, or Brazilian arrives in the Dominican Republic, they feel at home. Furthermore, operators and airlines have done an excellent job improving connectivity. The Southern Cone has come out in defense of our tourism, and we are very grateful for that.

As for destinations within the country, which ones are setting the trend?

The Dominican Republic is much more than Punta Cana. We are developing new tourist destinations like Miches, Punta Bergantín, and Pedernales, which showcase our country's natural and cultural diversity. We seek to decentralize tourism so that communities also benefit.

What investments are being made to strengthen this expansion?

We have invested in airport infrastructure, public beaches, seawalls, and lighting, as well as in modernizing the Tourist Police, which is now better equipped and more present. Our goal is inclusive and sustainable tourism, where growth translates into well-being for people.

What's new for Argentine travelers?

There's some very good news. The Dominican Republic will be the Guest Country for FIT 2026, which strengthens our relationship with the Argentine market. Furthermore, we welcome the Argentine government's decision to eliminate visa requirements for Dominicans holding US visas, which will undoubtedly facilitate trade between the two countries.
