The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced the launch of its new global campaign, "Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries," an awareness program that seeks to educate travelers on best practices for safely transporting devices with lithium batteries, such as phones, laptops, and power banks.
According to a recent IATA survey, 83% of passengers carry a mobile phone, 60% a laptop, and 44% a portable charger when traveling. Although most claim to be aware of the rules, common misunderstandings persist: 50% of respondents believe they can check devices with lithium batteries in checked baggage, and 45% believe the same about power banks. These practices can pose a risk if the batteries are damaged or improperly packaged.
To reduce incidents, the campaign highlights seven simple rules: always carry devices in carry-on luggage, protect loose batteries, verify battery size and capacity, and consult each airline's regulations before flying. It also recommends removing devices if carry-on luggage must be checked at the gate.
“Devices with lithium batteries are safe when handled correctly, but can pose a risk if damaged or improperly packaged. Our campaign will help airlines educate passengers on the simple rules they should follow,” said Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President, Operations, Safety and Security.
The initiative will be disseminated globally with visual and digital materials that airlines and airports can adapt to their corporate identity, promoting consistent safety messages across the airline industry.
