Mexico's cultural heritage will attract 14.6 million visitors in the first eight months of 2025

Mexican Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora reported that, during the period from January to August 2025, the number of visitors to the country's archaeological sites and museums totaled 14.6 million, a figure that reflects the strengthening of cultural tourism nationwide.

"The increase in visits to museums and archaeological sites reflects the interest of national and international tourists in learning about and appreciating our cultural heritage, which, in turn, drives local economic development and contributes to the generation of Shared Prosperity," he said.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism detailed that, between January and August 2025, the country's museums received 7.7 million visitors, of which 89 percent were national and 11 percent were foreign. She specified that this figure represents an increase of 17.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024 and 3.9 percent compared to 2019.

He also noted that, according to information from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, the museums with the highest attendance so far this year are the National Museum of Anthropology, the National Museum of History, and the Templo Mayor Museum.

He also indicated that the country's archaeological sites received 6.9 million visitors during the same period, of which 64 percent were domestic and 36 percent were foreign.

He explained that this figure represents a 4 percent increase compared to 2024. Furthermore, the most visited archaeological sites were Chichén Itzá, with 1.5 million visitors; Teotihuacán, with 1.2 million; and Tulum, with 790,000 visitors, which together represent 51 percent of the national total.

“Mexico's historical and cultural wealth is one of our greatest tourist attractions. Every museum and archaeological site tells a part of our history and allows us to showcase Mexico's greatness to the world, thus strengthening the arrival of more visitors and the development of cultural tourism in the country,” he concluded.
