The Middle East is emerging as a key player on the global tourism map. Its dual role as a high-value source market and a destination for unique experiences makes it a strategic region for Meliá Hotels International's positioning. With a clear vision for the future, the company has taken a decisive step in its expansion across the Gulf region with the signing of its first hotel in Bahrain, located on the exclusive Amwaj Island. This prime beachfront location will be the setting for an iconic Meliá Hotels & Resorts project, slated to open in 2027, featuring 256 units, including 150 hotel rooms and 106 branded residences managed by the company.

The addition of these Branded Residences represents a strategic commitment to a model that combines hotel excellence with real estate ownership, offering customers a new way to experience luxury, especially in a region that stands out for its rapid economic development and high demand for luxury lifestyle and residential experiences.

Designed to Meliá Hotels & Resorts' high standards of excellence, the new hotel on Amwaj Island will offer a comprehensive lifestyle experience that combines wellness, design, and personalized experiences. Guests and owners alike will enjoy exclusive services, thoughtfully designed spaces, and attentive service that reflects the brand's commitment to contemporary living.

Among its facilities are five swimming pools, numerous restaurants and retail spaces, dedicated wellness areas, gardens, and a wide range of facilities for events and meetings (MICE). Furthermore, as a distinctive feature of the project, Beso Beach, the renowned international beach club, will be incorporated, imbuing the hotel with a sophisticated and exclusive Mediterranean atmosphere, featuring signature cuisine, private cabanas, and members-only areas.

A booming destination in the heart of the Gulf

Bahrain has positioned itself as one of the region's most dynamic tourism markets, driven by a robust government strategy, modern infrastructure, and a clear commitment to economic diversification through leisure and culture. In 2023, the country welcomed over 10 million visitors, and this figure is expected to exceed 14 million by 2026, according to its Tourism Strategy 2022–2026.

Amwaj Island, the site of the new Meliá hotel, is an artificial island designed as a planned community, offering a perfect balance of privacy, lifestyle, and accessibility. Just 15 minutes from Bahrain International Airport, the area is known for its relaxed atmosphere, ocean views, private beaches, and high-end dining, wellness, and water sports.

For Gabriel Escarrer, President and CEO of Meliá, “Bahrain represents a unique opportunity to boost our presence in the Middle East. Its growing influence as a source market, along with the development of high-value destinations, makes it a strategic hub for our brands. Therefore, having a presence and being recognized in a region that is redefining global tourism is an essential part of our long-term vision.”

For Majed Al Khan, CEO of Infracorp, the company developing the project, “The alliance with Meliá Hotels International marks a significant milestone in our mission to position Bahrain as a leading tourist destination. At Infracorp, we are committed to developing sustainable, high-impact projects that strengthen the country’s international appeal. Thanks to Meliá’s global prestige and our solid expertise, this collaboration will result in a transformative hotel experience on Amwaj Island.”
