Viva lands in Costa Rica with its new Monterrey – San José route

The Mexican airline expands its international network and strengthens connectivity between Mexico and Central America, with two weekly flights linking Monterrey with the Costa Rican capital

San José, Costa Rica, October 31, 2025 – Viva, the Mexican airline recognized for its flexible and accessible model, officially launched its first service in Costa Rica with the new Monterrey (MTY) – San José (SJO) route. This new service, which will operate twice a week, connects Costa Rican travelers with one of the most dynamic cities in northern Mexico and, in turn, with more than 45 domestic and international destinations from Monterrey Airport.

The launch of this route represents a significant step forward in Costa Rica's air connectivity. During the inaugural flight, Costa Rica's Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, celebrated Viva's arrival, highlighting its potential to strengthen cultural and economic exchange between the two countries.

“We hope travelers will experience the essence of Pura Vida while discovering our nature, beaches, and cuisine. This flight strengthens the friendship between two sister nations, boosting tourism, trade, and social progress,” said Rodríguez.

For his part, Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS, manager of the Juan Santamaría International Airport, stressed that the new connection with Monterrey “marks a before and after in Costa Rican connectivity, facilitating the arrival of more Mexican tourists and strengthening the development of the sector and the national economy.”

The schedule includes flights on Mondays and Fridays from Monterrey, and Tuesdays and Saturdays from San José, operating overnight. From Monterrey, passengers can easily connect to destinations such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún, Los Cabos, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, and New York, among others.

During the ceremony, Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Grupo Viva Aerobus, highlighted:

“We are very excited to land in Costa Rica, a country with which we share values ​​and a passion for tourism. From today, Viva becomes a new partner for Costa Rican air connectivity, offering a modern, accessible, and reliable experience.”

The opening of this route coincides with Viva's 19th anniversary. The airline currently operates more than 190 routes to over 60 destinations in Mexico, the United States, Colombia, Cuba, and now Costa Rica. Viva has seven operating bases and a fleet of 101 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, solidifying its position as the youngest and most modern airline in Mexico and Latin America.

In addition, Viva continues to strengthen its relationship with passengers through its Doters loyalty program, which already has over 10 million members, and through its "flex-YES-bility" proposal, which offers travelers multiple benefits to change, transfer or adjust their flights according to their needs.
