During its 26th General Assembly held in Riyadh, UN Tourism confirmed the appointment of Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais as its next Secretary-General, replacing Zurab Pololikashvili, whose term will end in late 2025. The decision marks a historic moment for the institution, as it is the first time a woman has held its top executive position since its founding
Al Nowais, a native of the United Arab Emirates, has a distinguished track record in responsible tourism, sustainable investment, and destination management. With a background in economics and extensive experience in business leadership, she has worked to strengthen tourism's role as an engine for inclusive development and a tool for social transformation.
In her confirmation speech, Al Nowais expressed her commitment to continue driving innovation, sustainability, and digitalization in the sector. “Tourism has the power to unite cultures, create opportunities, and protect our shared heritage. My priority will be to ensure that its growth is truly inclusive and resilient,” she said.
The future Secretary-General also emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation and collaboration between the public and private sectors, with a special focus on education and the empowerment of women and youth within the industry.
Al Nowais's appointment reinforces UN Tourism's vision of building a more equitable, modern sector committed to the Sustainable Development Goals.
