In the context of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), taking place from November 10 to 21 in Belém, Brazil, the LATAM Group announced its participation agenda and actions aimed at reinforcing its commitment to more efficient and environmentally friendly aviation.
During the event, LATAM will sponsor the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP), a global initiative led by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) that seeks to strengthen private sector participation in the climate agenda.
“COP30 is currently the center of the global conversation on climate change, and for LATAM it is crucial to be present in the spaces where decisions are made that will define the future of our region. We want to contribute a perspective based on action and collaboration. South America has an essential role to play in the transition to a low-carbon economy and in the protection of biodiversity,”
said Juan José Tohá, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability for the LATAM group.
Participation in Panels and Regional Leadership:
LATAM will participate in panels alongside authorities, specialists, and private sector leaders, addressing topics such as innovation, operational efficiency, sustainable fuels (SAF), and the decarbonization of air transport.
Among the most notable sessions is the presentation by Jerome Cadier, CEO of LATAM Brazil, along with representatives from ANAC (the Chilean National Civil Aviation Administration), the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, and Trade of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin.
The group will also be present at meetings organized by IATA, ATAG (the International Air Transport Association), and the Ministry of Tourism, consolidating its leadership in aviation sustainability in Latin America.
Initiatives during COP30:
LATAM will implement a series of actions to support the event's logistics and generate a positive impact on local communities:
Sustainable Tourism Guide of the Northern Region of Brazil, prepared together with Amcham Brazil and Embratur, promoting responsible destinations that integrate economic development, environmental conservation and cultural enhancement.
Support for the relocation of indigenous leaders and native peoples, in coordination with the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples.
Collaboration with the Federal Government, through the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP30, by providing air tickets for the organization and execution of the event.
Strengthening connectivity with Belém, with a 65% increase in seat capacity during the conference.
Recognition and Long-Term Commitments:
LATAM was included in the SB COP Booklet of Cases with its study, "Decarbonization Pathways of the Aviation Sector," which details the group's main lines of innovation to advance towards low-carbon aviation.
Furthermore, the airline was recognized as the most sustainable in the Americas and fifth in the world in S&P Global's Sustainability Yearbook 2024, and was reinstated in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index after five years.
Regarding climate management, LATAM is working to reduce emissions through improvements in operational efficiency, fleet renewal, and creating conditions for the use of Sustainable Air Transport (SAF). Its Fuel Efficiency program has achieved a 6.5% improvement in operational efficiency since 2010, avoiding the consumption of more than 2 million barrels of fuel and the emission of 5.6 million tons of CO₂.
The group is also advancing one of the region's most ambitious fleet renewal plans, incorporating 200 state-of-the-art aircraft by 2030—including Boeing 787s, Airbus A320/A321neos, and Embraer E195-E2s—which consume and emit up to 25% less than previous models.
With these actions, LATAM reaffirms its regional leadership in sustainability, strengthening its commitment to aviation that connects people, drives development, and actively contributes to addressing climate change.
