Faced with increasing passenger traffic and the growing complexity of digital operations, the airline industry needs to adopt infrastructure capable of supporting a high level of connectivity and resilience. In this context, Qatar Airways implemented SITA's SD-WAN technology across all its international stations, marking the company's first large-scale deployment of this solution for a global airline.

SD-WAN replaces traditional rigid systems with a flexible, intelligent network that manages data flow across multiple connections—including MPLS, broadband, dedicated internet, and LTE/5G access—selecting the most efficient option in real time. This approach improves response times, minimizes disruptions, and enhances the availability of systems that need to operate continuously in hundreds of locations worldwide.

The implementation reached over 350 international stations and several data centers, resolving latency and bandwidth issues and ensuring that essential applications maintain operational priority. This translates into faster processing times, quicker access to digital services, and an optimized passenger experience at every touchpoint.

The project also significantly strengthens cybersecurity. The managed network incorporates multiple layers of protection to keep sensitive data safe and ensure operational continuity. Measures include encrypted communication channels, strict access controls, and a zero-trust model that continuously verifies users and connected devices. This comprehensive approach reduces exposure to cyber threats and provides Qatar Airways with a highly secure end-to-end infrastructure.

“The airline industry faces increased traffic, heightened security risks, and legacy systems that require modernization,” said Selim Bouri, President for the Middle East and Africa at SITA. “SD-WAN represents a structural shift by offering speed, resilience, and security on a global scale. Qatar Airways demonstrates how these networks enable new levels of efficiency and customer experience.”

For Qatar Airways, the initiative is part of a broader strategy. “Our commitment to innovation is geared towards strengthening every phase of the journey and our operations,” said Suhail Kadri, the airline’s Chief Information Officer (CIO). “The collaboration with SITA reflects that vision. We are building a future-proof infrastructure that supports our growth plans and sets new standards in global airline connectivity.”

With the adoption of SITA's SD-WAN, Qatar Airways is moving towards a more modern, stable, and scalable operating ecosystem. Its hub-and-spoke network, connecting more than 172 destinations with a fleet of 250 aircraft, now rests on a digital backbone designed to support seamless expansion and a fully integrated travel experience.
