The Cayo District, the largest by area in the Central American country, has achieved significant international recognition by being selected among the “100 Best Stories of Green Destinations” for 2025.

Launched in 2014, the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition rewards destinations that demonstrate measurable achievements in sustainable tourism practices. Each story is evaluated based on effectiveness, innovation and transferability, recognising models that can inspire and be replicated worldwide.

The Belize story, “Loving Cayo: A Harmonious Blend of Conservation and Culture for a Vibrant Future”, was recognised among the best good-practice stories in the world. It highlights how communities and tourism enterprises are working together to protect natural resources and promote economic growth.

This recognition reflects the collective efforts of conservationists dedicated to preserving biodiversity and empowering communities through responsible tourism. Moreover, it underscores Belize’s growing reputation as a destination that not only offers impressive natural beauty, but also places sustainability and collaboration at the heart of its tourism model.

From indigenous artisans and local entrepreneurs to conservation organisations and eco-conscious hotel brands, the Cayo District is an example of how progress and preservation can coexist. This initiative has been made possible thanks to the joint efforts of Belize Karst Habitat Conservation, Itzamna Society, Bulridge Ltd., Lucky Dreamer Lodge, Sak Tunich and the Green Iguana Conservation Project of San Ignacio Resort Hotel.

The Cayo District, which hosts the capital Belmopan, offers fascinating activities such as caving, hiking, horseback riding and camping, among others. It is known for the majestic Mayan sites of Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Caracol, its fascinating cave systems, its lush jungle and cinematic mountain views. Here, every site tells a story of heritage, creativity and natural splendour.

Whether exploring ancient temples or savouring local delicacies, every place promises an unforgettable adventure.
Belize Tourism Board congratulates all the partners and change-agents who have participated in this achievement. Their dedication continues to strengthen Belize’s position as a leader in regenerative, community-driven tourism. Together they celebrate yet another milestone in Belize’s sustainable tourism journey.
