UN Tourism strengthened the capacities of its Member States in the Asia–Pacific region through a workshop focused on improving the management and production of tourism data. The initiative brought together tourism authorities, national statistics offices and international experts to promote common methodologies and tools that allow for more accurate measurement of tourism’s economic, social and environmental impacts.
The sessions worked with instruments such as the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), the Measuring Sustainability of Tourism (MST) framework and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA), which help quantify key variables such as employment generated by the sector, local community perception and the environmental footprint of tourism activity.
One of the central themes was the need to strengthen the governance of tourism data, fostering greater coordination between tourism agencies and statistical institutions, as well as information exchange among countries in the region. This will enable decisions and public policies to be based on solid and comparable evidence.
UN Tourism emphasized that the availability of reliable data is essential for tourism to contribute to sustainable development, promoting economic growth, reducing inequalities and preserving the natural and cultural resources of destinations.
