Emirates and Air Canada announced the expansion and extension of their strategic alliance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding that extends their collaboration until December 2032. The agreement deepens a relationship that began in 2022, during which time more than 550,000 passengers have benefited from seamless connections across 56 codeshare routes linking Canada, the United States, Dubai, and other key destinations worldwide. The renewal includes an expansion of the shared network, greater benefits for eligible travelers, and strengthened cooperation in cargo operations, boosting bilateral trade between the Americas, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

The decision comes amid growing demand for global connectivity. Air Canada highlighted that the partnership supports daily service between Toronto and Dubai and facilitates access to regions with strong cultural, family, and commercial ties to Canada. Emirates, for its part, emphasized that the expansion will enhance the passenger experience on codeshare flights and strengthen cargo transport capabilities between the two markets. Both companies also recognize the strategic role of the aviation sector in economic development and anticipate that the expanded cooperation will catalyze new growth opportunities.

The agreement will strengthen tourism, trade, and connectivity between the two countries. Initiatives under consideration include evaluating a potential joint venture focused on global cargo operations, enhanced operational coordination, and access to new gateways within Canada. An organized transition of operations to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central (DWC) is also projected for the middle of the next decade, further enhancing joint operational efficiency.

Since its inception, the alliance has grown steadily and now comprises a network that allows Emirates customers to connect to 37 destinations in North America, including routes recently added by Air Canada. Air Canada, in turn, maintains its code on 19 Emirates-operated services to the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Simultaneously, the interline alliance provides access to more than 225 global destinations.

The improvements for customers include priority benefits for eligible passengers, lounge amenities, and expanded Aeroplan and Skywards loyalty programs, which allow for the accumulation and redemption of points or miles across the network operated by both airlines. Reciprocal redemptions are also planned to be extended to the Premium Economy cabin, expanding the possibilities for frequent flyers.

Currently, Air Canada operates a daily service between Toronto and Dubai with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, while Emirates connects Dubai with Toronto using its Airbus A380 and maintains seven weekly flights to Montreal with Boeing 777s. The intensified cooperation will allow travelers to access more efficient global connectivity and carriers to optimize the flow of goods in strategic markets, consolidating the relevance of this alliance on the international aviation stage.
