UN Tourism, in collaboration with AWE on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has introduced new guidelines designed to help tourism businesses incorporate accessibility as a key component of their operations. The document, titled “Accessibility Guidelines for Tourism Businesses,” compiles practical recommendations for accommodations, travel agencies, transport companies, and destinations to adapt their services in a simple, gradual, and economically viable way.

The guidelines are structured around five clear steps aimed at improving visitor experience, attracting a wider audience, and promoting equal access. The initiative highlights that more than 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, in addition to a growing population of older adults who also require accessible services. In this context, accessibility is not only a commitment to inclusion but also an underestimated business opportunity.

UN Tourism warns that many companies lose competitiveness by not offering accessible services, which can result in lost customers, penalties, or exclusion from certain public benefits and programs. Conversely, implementing inclusive measures enhances reputation, strengthens relationships with travelers, and contributes to a more sustainable and responsible tourism sector.

With these new guidelines, the tourism industry now has a tool to advance toward more inclusive business models, create accessible employment, and ensure safer and more comfortable travel experiences for all.
