At major airports worldwide, border control remains one of the most complex challenges: how to process a growing number of passengers quickly and securely while maintaining a seamless travel experience. São Paulo – Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), Brazil’s busiest terminal, has tackled this challenge head-on with the launch of the country’s largest airport automation project. In partnership with SITA, the airport has completed the first phase of installing 42 new
Automated Border Control (ABC) Gates, replacing older equipment with modern systems powered by advanced biometric technology and updated software.

The new solution brings faster processing, greater accuracy, and superior operational efficiency to border control operations. The implementation, carried out in partnership with Digicon, a Brazilian company based in Rio Grande do Sul, also supports the national technology industry and strengthens local innovation capabilities.

For passengers, the improvement translates into shorter lines and faster border controls, enhancing the overall travel experience. For the Federal Police, it allows for better resource allocation and greater productivity. And for the airport, it offers operational efficiency aligned with international best practices in border management.

“We are pleased to take another step towards a more efficient, streamlined, and safe journey for passengers at São Paulo International Airport. The installation of the new ABC gates, in collaboration with SITA, reinforces GRU Airport’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation to offer the best passenger experience,” said Marcelo Vasconcellos, Director of Operations at GRU Airport.

The project further deepens the collaboration between SITA and GRU Airport, who already work together on several technological fronts to improve airport performance and passenger satisfaction.

“Border control is one of the most critical points in any airport journey, where efficiency and security must go hand in hand,” said Daniel Granado, Director of SITA Brazil. “By modernizing GRU’s ABC gates with state-of-the-art biometric solutions, we are demonstrating how technology can help airports and authorities safely and efficiently manage the growing volume of passengers. This project is a benchmark for Brazil and a clear example of how innovation can generate a real operational impact for the entire industry.”

The Federal Police at Guarulhos Airport stated: “The Federal Police actively participates in technological advancements, making every effort to ensure their implementation in the areas of security and immigration control, with the installation of the new e-gates being a further step in this direction.”
