Costa Cruises and LC3 Trasporti, a leading sustainable transport company from Umbria (Italy) at the national and European level, have launched a pilot project in the ports of Genoa and Savona that involves the use of electric trucks for ship refueling operations.
The trial, conducted in October 2025, used heavy-duty electric vehicles (BEVs) with a payload capacity exceeding 40 tons. This initiative represents a natural evolution of a path already begun, which in previous years incorporated vehicles powered by bio-LNG to reduce emissions in logistics operations. With the addition of BEVs, the possibility of zero-emission operations is now open for journeys that can be completed entirely using electric power.
The results obtained have led to the decision to continue the collaboration through 2026, with plans to increase the use of electric vehicles. The goal is to gradually integrate zero-emission solutions with those already in use, such as the bio-LNG-powered vehicles employed on medium- and long-distance routes in Italy and Europe, to maximize the reduction of environmental impact in the various operational areas.
The collaboration between LC3 Trasporti and Costa Cruises, which began in 2022, has already resulted in a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to 2018 levels, thanks to the coverage of various national and international routes with low-impact vehicles. The introduction of electric trucks is a
further step within a broader and more structured plan aimed at making maritime logistics increasingly sustainable and aligned with European decarbonization goals.
Thanks to the initiatives developed in recent years, LC3 Trasporti has helped Costa Cruises' logistics services to reach sustainability standards already aligned with future European emissions targets.
Marco Diodà, Vice President of Procurement & Supply Chain at Costa Cruises, stated that “our journey towards greenhouse gas neutrality continues under the banner of innovation. This applies not only to our fleet but also to all cruise-related activities, including the logistics necessary for supplying our ships. For this reason, following a positive initial experience in 2023, we decided to extend our collaboration with LC3 Trasporti, an Italian partner that shares our values and vision.”
For his part, Michele Ambrogi, Commercial Director of LC3 Trasporti, stated: “We are proud to have been chosen by Costa Cruises, an Italian company and part of Carnival Corporation, as partners in this ambitious project. For the past three years, we have been working side by side, step by step, continuously improving our
transport solutions with a common goal: to protect the environment and future generations.”
With the launch of this new pilot project, LC3 Trasporti continues its clear path of innovation in sustainable logistics, working alongside Costa Cruises to introduce operational solutions with an ever-decreasing environmental impact. This initiative is part of a long-term strategy aimed at integrating low-emission technologies into port supply services, reaffirming both companies' commitment to decarbonization.
