Volaris and Viva announced their decision to join forces to form a new Mexican airline group, subject to regulatory and shareholder approval. The initiative aims to strengthen the country's air connectivity and expand the availability of low-cost flights, both within Mexico and to international destinations, leveraging the ultra-low-cost model that both companies have developed over the past two decades.
According to the airlines, the creation of the group will allow them to leverage economies of scale, greater distribution capacity, and a more resilient operating platform. This will translate into lower fleet and capital costs, enabling more competitive fares and the opening of new routes, especially in regions with limited connectivity.
The new structure will operate under a holding company, maintaining Volaris and Viva as independent airlines with separate operating certificates, brands, and networks. For passengers, this means there will be no changes to existing bookings, loyalty programs, or the current travel experience. Both Altitude and Doters will remain active, with points, benefits, and status unchanged.
Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Volaris, stated that this acquisition represents a long-term growth opportunity for aviation in Mexico, in line with the low-fare, point-to-point flight approach that has transformed the industry. For his part, Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva, emphasized that both companies share the same low-cost DNA and the commitment to making flying more accessible to everyone, maintaining an ultra-low-cost strategy as the foundation for future growth.
From a market perspective, the new airline group aims to strengthen existing operational bases and establish new bases in cities with limited air service, promoting direct and regional flights. Furthermore, greater schedule flexibility and the potential development of global alliances are expected to expand passenger options.
The companies anticipate a positive impact not only for travelers, but also for employees, shareholders, and Mexico's tourism and economic ecosystem, contributing to the democratization of air transport and the country's regional development.
