Through this global certification, the Mallorcan chain reaffirms its commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism and fulfills in 2025 a milestone that it had planned to achieve next year in the roadmap of its four-year sustainability strategy Proudly Committed (2023 – 2026).

With 98 certified hotels in 21 countries, and excluding only recently opened hotels without analytical consumption data, such as the Riu Plaza Toronto in Canada and the Riu Ventura in Mexico, the chain reaches a significant milestone in its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy and ensures that the certification covers 100% of its hotel operations.

This certification from ECOSTARS, the leading ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) AI platform for hotels, recognized by international organizations such as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and national organizations such as the Spanish Tourism Council, provides the hotel chain with crucial tools for environmental management. These include the calculation of its Scope 3 carbon footprint, which refers to the indirect impact that occurs throughout the entire value chain: from the production of the food served to the transportation of supplies. Furthermore, it offers RIU a robust database of sustainability attributes, facilitating transparent communication with travel agencies and tour operators.

Xisca Sitjar, RIU's Operational Sustainability Manager, explains that the choice of ECOSTARS is based on its comparative analysis platform, which provides RIU with a clear view of its consumption by comparing its hotels with a broad community of establishments with similar characteristics and destinations: “It is the perfect tool because it is specifically designed for the particularities of the hotel industry. Unlike general certifications, its process is simplified and focuses directly on key metrics of positive impact such as energy and water consumption and waste management, in addition to having third-party verification for robust validation.”

RIU's total sustainability certification with ECOSTARS provides multifaceted value that directly impacts the reduction of operating costs through the continuous optimization of energy and water consumption; facilitates access to market niches such as MICE tourism, which increasingly has more demanding sustainability requirements; attracts travelers with high ESG awareness and professionals aligned with the chain's values; and helps mitigate regulatory and financial risks arising from environmental management.
