Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) is strengthening its connection with Latin America through the expansion of Copa Airlines' air connectivity, solidifying the island's position as one of the Caribbean's most promising destinations for travelers from the region. With five weekly direct flights from Panama City (PTY), Barbados is significantly improving its accessibility from key Latin American markets.
The increased flight frequency allows for seamless connections via Panama and reinforces Barbados' positioning as a comprehensive destination that combines culture, safety, gastronomy, and a travel experience conceived from an "inclusive island" perspective. In a context of high seasonal demand in Latin America, Barbados presents itself as an alternative that transcends the traditional sun and beach concept.
Since 2018, the island has steadily developed its air network to facilitate access for Latin American travelers. In the last year, Barbados recorded a 38% increase in arrivals from Central and South America, an indicator that confirms the growing interest in the destination.
“Improved connectivity through Copa Airlines represents a significant change for Barbados in Latin America,” said Corey Garrett, Director of Sales and Marketing for LATAM at BTMI. “With five weekly flights from Panama, the island is solidifying its position as an accessible and attractive option for those seeking a unique Caribbean experience. The inclusive island concept allows for a combination of high-end accommodations with the freedom to explore beaches, culinary offerings, festivals, and sporting events in a safe and easily navigable environment.”
A Caribbean with its own identity
Barbados is positioning itself as a premium yet easily accessible destination for Latin American travelers. Recognized as the birthplace of rum and the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean, the island offers a diverse gastronomic scene ranging from fresh seafood and traditional seaside stalls to haute cuisine and immersive experiences at the historic Mount Gay Distillery, the oldest in the world.
Cultural affinity is expressed in music, dance, festivals, and a way of experiencing travel deeply linked to gastronomy and celebration, which reinforces a sense of familiarity combined with discovery.
Nature, sport and active experiences
The tourism offerings are complemented by a wide variety of outdoor activities. Barbados boasts crystal-clear beaches perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and water sports, as well as renowned surf breaks on the Atlantic coast and calmer waters in the Caribbean, ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, and recreational boating. The island has also gained international visibility through competitions associated with the World Surf League.
Diving and snorkeling offer the chance to explore coral reefs, abundant marine life, and accessible shipwrecks, while open water swimming, sailing, and catamaran trips are part of a busy schedule throughout the year. These experiences are complemented by nature trails, hiking routes, and underground exploration in the iconic Harrison's Cave.
Sports tourism occupies a prominent place, with seven championship-level golf courses, an alliance with the PGA TOUR and the organization of international events including marathons, triathlons, cricket, polo and motor racing.
Well-being and reconnection
The wellness segment finds a privileged setting in Barbados. Luxury spas and retreats, beachfront yoga programs, mindfulness practices, coastal walks, and experiences in natural environments promote a style of travel focused on conscious relaxation. Healthy cuisine based on local products blends with the tradition of rum, offering options that combine nutrition, pleasure, and cultural heritage.
With expanding air connectivity and an offering that integrates culture, nature, sports and wellness, Barbados reinforces its position as a Caribbean destination with its own identity and growing relevance among Latin American travelers during the summer season.
