Guanacaste Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, announced that Canadian airline Porter Airlines will make its Toronto-Liberia route permanent, following the success recorded since its launch last December.
The Toronto–Guanacaste (YYZ–LIR) route, inaugurated on December 4, 2025, as a peak-season service, will now operate year-round. Porter's decision follows the route's strong performance in its first few months of operation.
According to the company's schedule, between May and October flights will operate twice a week (Wednesdays and Sundays), while during peak season — from November to April — the frequency will increase to an average of six weekly flights, operated with Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
The service expansion is the result of a joint strategy between Guanacaste Airport and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). Thanks to this coordinated effort, Guanacaste became the first airport in Central America to receive Porter flights with its route to Toronto. Shortly thereafter, the airline inaugurated direct flights from Ottawa (YOW), establishing the first direct air connection between Costa Rica and the Canadian capital.
Currently, Guanacaste Airport is the entry point with the greatest direct connectivity to Canada in the country, with flights to six cities: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Calgary.
Costa Rica's Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, highlighted Canada's consolidation as the country's second-largest source of tourists, with significant growth potential. "At the start of this new year, and in the midst of the 2025-2026 peak season, we received confirmation from Porter Airlines that it will expand its flights from Toronto to Guanacaste due to the success of this connection. The airline will operate at least two weekly flights practically year-round. We appreciate the confidence placed in Costa Rica, as this decision will strengthen economic ties and generate more employment in Guanacaste and nearby destinations," he stated.
For his part, César Jaramillo, CEO of Guanacaste Airport, noted that Toronto is one of the most dynamic markets for the region. “We welcome the increased flight frequency from Porter, as it will allow for greater seat availability and reinforce Canadian travelers' preference for our airport as their main gateway to Costa Rica,” he stated.
According to ICT data for 2025, Canada was the second largest source market for tourists to Costa Rica, with 260,347 travelers arriving by air during the last year.
