Carnival 2026 in Rio de Janeiro is projected to generate significant tourism activity and a positive impact on the local economy. International air travel to the city is expected to grow by an estimated 9% compared to the previous year, according to data from Embratur , driven primarily by source markets such as Chile, the United States, and Argentina. This performance aligns with the national trend, as Brazil registered a 21% increase in demand for air travel compared to 2025.
For Marcelo Freixo , president of Embratur, the Rio Carnival plays a strategic role in the country's international projection. “At least 160 countries turn their attention to Brazil when the Rio de Janeiro Carnival begins. The samba school parade is one of the most traditional events in the world. Those who experience its magnitude seek to learn more about Brazil, about what the country has to offer, and about the history of a people whose culture is capable of creating a celebration of this scale,” he noted.
International interest is also reflected in the hotel sector. A survey by Booking.com ranks Rio de Janeiro as the most sought-after destination for the Carnival period, followed by Porto de Galinhas (PE), Salvador (BA), João Pessoa (PB), and Cabo Frio (RJ).
While the parades on Marquês de Sapucaí and the traditional street parties remain the heart of the celebration, Rio's Carnival is expanding its offerings with the revival of historic balls and the growth of private events. Events like the Copacabana Palace Ball and the Fairmont Rio Ball are revitalizing the grand ballroom format and attracting diverse audiences.
In this context, Visit Rio presented a special guide featuring themed parties, major shows, DJs, and immersive experiences. The calendar extends beyond the official Carnival days, with activities beginning before the festivities and continuing after Ash Wednesday.
With rising international demand, an increasingly diverse program, and greater air connectivity, Carnival 2026 reaffirms Rio de Janeiro as one of the world's great tourist and cultural destinations.
