Costa Rica, in its role as the country chairing the UN Tourism Committee on Tourism and Sustainability , is leading the preparation process for the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027. The initiative is based on the Roadmap announced by the organization and has the support of its governing bodies.

The Roadmap was the result of a collaborative process and received the endorsement of the Tourism and Sustainability Committee during its meeting in January in Madrid, Spain. The document establishes guidelines for moving from dialogue to action, with the aim of strengthening a tourism sector that contributes to the well-being, transformation, resilience, and development of people.

“This process recognizes something that our country has maintained for decades: sustainability and resilience are not final goals, but rather ongoing work that connects tourism with the development and prosperity of communities,” stated William Rodríguez López, Minister of Tourism. He also emphasized that the 2027 International Year of Tourism represents an opportunity to translate global consensus into coordinated actions and tangible results.

Costa Rica's commitment to a sustainable tourism development model has been internationally recognized. The country's strategy promotes biodiversity conservation, contact with nature, the strengthening of local economies, the appreciation of culture and traditions, and the well-being of communities, with a direct impact on job creation.

During the January meeting, the Committee valued UN Tourism's work in incorporating the priorities of Member States and highlighted the commitment of the new leadership to begin, with determination, the preparation of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027.

The governance process for the actions will be structured around the Tourism and Sustainability Committee, guided by a Steering Committee made up of Member States, informed by consultations at the meetings of the Regional Commissions and supported by the UN Tourism Executive Council.
