Unpredictability in travel accelerates demand for travel insurance

Climate change, operational shifts, and high medical costs abroad are transforming travel planning, driving a culture of prevention that is now integrated into modern tourism

Today, anyone planning a trip knows that the weather can alter routes, that an airport can adjust operations without prior notice, or that a destination might be more crowded than expected. Far from dampening the desire to travel, this reality has pushed travelers to anticipate and incorporate new decisions into their planning.

In Mexico, this scenario is particularly evident. During holiday seasons, the high concentration of passengers at airports and tourist destinations often leads to delays, rescheduling, and operational adjustments that are now part of the experience. Added to this are weather variations, which in some cases affect roads, flights, and tourist activities, according to data from the National Meteorological Service.

Given this context, the conversation shifted from fear to prevention as part of well-being. Just as people check weather conditions or plan itineraries with extra time, the need for support during travel is also growing, especially when traveling abroad or to destinations with limited medical infrastructure.

IATI Insurance explains that traveling with peace of mind doesn't mean avoiding risks, but rather knowing that support is available when something goes wrong, whether it's medical attention, hospitalization, lost luggage, or unexpected assistance. The company emphasizes its educational role in building a culture of prevention among travelers.

Today, nearly eight out of ten people consider travel insurance important when leaving the country, and four out of ten purchase it even for trips within their own country. This trend is largely due to an awareness of the costs that a medical emergency abroad can entail.

Hospitalization can exceed $10,000 in destinations like the United States or Japan, while travel medical insurance represents only a fraction of the total budget, especially when compared to the cost of a consultation, medical tests, or hospitalization abroad.

For this reason, insurance became a natural part of travel planning, on par with accommodation or transportation. In addition to medical coverage, it now includes services such as video call assistance, protection against lost or damaged luggage, reimbursements for delays or cancellations, coverage for outdoor sports activities, and cancellation expenses.

According to the company, this shift reflects a more informed and well-being-conscious traveler. Prevention is no longer seen as a luxury, but as a tool for enhancing the overall experience. Having assistance in the traveler's language and support in challenging situations allows them to enjoy the experience with less stress.

“Traveling today means accepting that not everything can be controlled, but there are decisions that help reduce uncertainty. Prevention doesn't limit the experience; on the contrary, it allows you to travel with greater peace of mind knowing that there is support if something unexpected happens,” stated Alfonso Calzado, CEO of IATI Seguros.
