Quintana Roo presents the Mexican Caribbean Diving Guide to promote tourism diversification

The Government of the State of Quintana Roo, through the Quintana Roo State Tourism Secretariat (SEDETUR), officially presented the Mexican Caribbean Diving Guide, an initiative aimed at diversifying the tourism offer and positioning the destination beyond the traditional sun and beach product.

The presentation was led by the Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, who reported that the document was developed in collaboration with diving pioneers and specialists, along with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council and hotel associations in the state. The guide features seven internationally recognized destinations for diving: Isla Mujeres, Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, and the Grand Costa Maya.

Diving tourism represents a strategic segment for the state. More than 500,000 visitors arrive in Quintana Roo annually with the primary objective of practicing this activity. The typical traveler stays an average of 7.7 days and groups of approximately 3.3 people, generating significant economic potential. Furthermore, the market shows a balance between domestic (49.3%) and international (50.7%) tourists.

Authorities emphasized that underwater activities not only attract nature-minded visitors but also strengthen the entire tourism value chain, including lodging, transportation, nautical services, gastronomy, and specialized tour operators. The guide is envisioned as a comprehensive platform to promote marine life, encourage responsible practices, and solidify the state's position as a leader in sustainable tourism.

The product's relevance is based on the presence of the Mesoamerican Reef System —the largest coral barrier on the continent— and extensive systems of cenotes, underground rivers and flooded caverns, elements that position the Mexican Caribbean among the world's leading diving destinations.

The event was attended by state tourism officials, representatives from the hotel industry, and diving specialists. A tribute was also paid to diving pioneer Ramón Bravo, and Alberto Friscione was recognized for his contributions to the sport in Mexico.

With this initiative, the state seeks to consolidate an innovative and sustainable tourism model, geared towards specialized segments that generate greater value, longer stays and a significant economic impact on local communities.
