The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) urged governments and civil aviation authorities to strengthen support systems for people affected by air accidents, noting that post-event institutional preparedness is a key component of global safety.
On the International Day of Remembrance for Air Accident Victims and their Families, ICAO Council President Toshiyuki Onuma stressed that aviation must not only focus on prevention, but also on ensuring humane, coordinated and effective responses when a tragedy occurs.
The organization reiterated that member states must have clear legislation and applicable mechanisms that include timely notification, transparent information sharing, psychological support, administrative assistance, and access to financial resources. It also emphasized the importance of coordination among governments, airlines, airports, and investigation teams.
As part of this effort, ICAO promotes the updating of national regulatory frameworks, the adoption of international standards, and the development of technical training programs to improve emergency preparedness. The goal is to ensure that families receive sustained support and dignified treatment throughout the entire process following an accident.
The organization emphasized that public trust in air transport is also built on how the industry and authorities respond to critical situations, incorporating empathy, transparency, and institutional accountability.
