American Airlines announced a $1 billion investment to expand and modernize Terminal D at Miami International Airport (MIA), in partnership with Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD). The project aims to improve the airport's operational efficiency, enhance the passenger experience, and strengthen Miami's role as the airline's primary international gateway.

The announcement was presented by Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines Group, along with local, state and federal authorities, who unveiled plans for a redesigned terminal that will modernize operations and facilitate the transit of international travelers.

“Miami is a vital hub and international gateway for American, and it’s a fundamental part of our history and our future,” said Isom. “The new and renovated D60 is a transformative project that will provide a much better experience for our customers and our team. This investment, along with the new lounges and new routes, reflects our shared commitment to Miami-Dade County and the airport to ensure that Miami remains the premier gateway from the United States to Latin America.”

American's legacy and the airport's future

With a planned start in 2027, the Gate D60 project will mark a new stage in the development of Miami International Airport. Currently equipped to handle smaller regional aircraft, the three-level expansion of Terminal D will allow for the addition of 17 new gates designed for larger aircraft and eliminate exterior boarding.

The project will also expand the shared boarding area, incorporating adjacent spaces for each gate with the aim of improving passenger flow and providing greater comfort during the boarding process.

Furthermore, the new infrastructure will facilitate international travel, as it will be able to receive flights from abroad and offer direct access from the third level to the customs area. The design will include spacious and bright areas with indoor palm trees, as well as new dining and shopping options.

“The D60 expansion is one of the most significant customer service improvements within our unprecedented airport-wide modernization plan, which will transform the passenger experience at Miami International Airport over the next five years,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

A key hub for global connectivity

American Airlines maintains a strong presence in Miami, with approximately 400 daily departures from the airport. During the peak summer season, the airline plans to operate more than 380 daily flights from MIA to 155 destinations in 45 countries.

The airline accounts for more than 60% of the airport's traffic, solidifying Miami as its primary international gateway. From this hub, it offers a leading network to Latin America and the Caribbean, with access to more than 90 exclusive destinations served only by American Airlines from MIA. New routes announced for this year include Milan, Italy, and Bimini, Bahamas.

“American and Miami-Dade have forged an alliance over decades that intertwines our success and vitality. We share a vision and legacy that have elevated Miami to the leading global gateway position it holds today,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s Vice President of Operations at Miami International Airport.

Economic impact and local development

The expansion also reinforces American Airlines' role as an economic engine for South Florida. The airline is the largest private employer in Miami-Dade County and maintains partnerships with educational institutions such as George T. Baker Aviation Technical College and Florida Memorial University Wyman School of Aviation to develop local talent in the aviation industry.

The company also actively participates in community initiatives and economic development programs that drive the region's growth.

Improvements to the passenger experience

As part of its customer-centric strategy, American Airlines has also announced new investments within the airport, including the opening of a state-of-the-art Flagship® lounge and the expansion of the Admirals Club® at MIA.

Over the past year, the airline has added self-service kiosks to streamline the check-in process and implemented technology designed to improve connections between flights. In addition, it has collaborated with federal agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on programs like TSA PreCheck Touchless ID and Enhanced Passenger Processing, which aim to expedite security checks while maintaining high standards of protection.
