Short trips with travel insurance: the trend this Easter

During Holy Week, more than 14.7 million people travel within Mexico. According to data from IATI Seguros, the current trend leans toward short trips and local tourism, accompanied by an increase in travel insurance purchases

A few years ago, planning a vacation meant booking months in advance, taking long flights, and leaving the city for several days. Today, the dynamic is different because Easter is no longer the big trip of the year but has become a brief break within the routine.

Even so, the scale of the movement remains enormous. The Ministry of Tourism anticipates that more than 14.7 million people will travel throughout the country during the holiday period, mostly on domestic routes and by road. However, what has changed is not the number of travelers, but the way they travel.

According to IATI Insurance, families, couples, and groups of friends are still traveling, although they now favor nearby towns, nature, beaches a few hours away, or three- or four-day getaways within the same state. The travel insurance company indicates that this decision stems from a practical reason: traveling locally allows for budget control, simplified logistics, and on-the-spot decisions, transforming the trip from a complex project into an extension of a long weekend.

This proximity also alters the perception of risk. Without crossing borders or taking long flights, many travelers assume they don't need additional preparation, even though this type of travel introduces other unforeseen circumstances. Road trips, hiking, outdoor activities, and water sports increase the likelihood of minor incidents, from delays and lost luggage to unexpected medical appointments that can occur just a few hours from home.

For this reason, a different habit is beginning to emerge in travel planning. Insurance, instead of being associated only with international trips, is also starting to be integrated into short trips as a practical decision.

IATI Insurance has identified precisely this change in behavior. Alfonso Calzado, the company's CEO, explains that travelers no longer distinguish between an "important" trip and a short one. "Today, people travel more often throughout the year, although for fewer days. And when the trip is short, the last thing they want is to waste time resolving a medical or administrative issue. Assistance becomes useful because it protects travel time," he points out.

This perspective explains why insurance policies designed not only for international travel but also for domestic getaways are emerging. IATI Escapadas, from IATI Seguros, is specifically designed for short trips within the country and includes medical and hospitalization expenses up to $10,000, adventure sports (from hiking to diving), incident management, and support in case of cancellations or itinerary interruptions.

IATI Escapadas also offers 24/7 Medical Assistance with Scan Face Technology. This is extremely attractive for travelers, as they don't need to go to a hospital to receive medical attention. With just a video call, a quick preliminary diagnosis is obtained thanks to intelligent iris scanning. The system analyzes the patient's condition with 95% accuracy and connects them with a specialist without them having to leave home. Finally, they receive a prescription and a complete medical report.

The cost is also low compared to the total trip expenses, making it more of an extraordinary continuation tool. For a three-day trip, the approximate cost of IATI Escapadas is 145 Mexican pesos. On a short trip, the main risk isn't a serious emergency, but rather losing one of the few available days trying to find a hospital, make advance payments, or complete paperwork.

The coverage then functions more as a time-saver than as extreme protection. “Before, insurance was purchased for long or international trips. Now it's purchased to avoid ruining a weekend you've been looking forward to for months,” Calzado mentions.

This shift reveals that travel is no longer a minor plan but a conscious choice that combines relaxation, flexibility, and budget control. The priority is no longer the distance traveled but tranquility during the few days available, so planning revolves less around the destination and more around preventing unforeseen events from disrupting the experience.
