Museums and archaeological sites in Mexico will exceed 2.1 million visitors in January 2026

Cultural venues registered a significant flow of visitors at the beginning of the year, with a strong predominance of national visitors and significant growth compared to 2025

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora , reported that during January 2026 the museums and archaeological zones of the country received a total of 2 million 175 thousand 711 visitors , consolidating Mexican cultural heritage as one of the main tourist attractions of the country.

According to data from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) , Mexican museums registered 1.2 million visitors , of which 88% were domestic and 12% were foreign . This figure represents a 21.2% increase compared to January 2015 and a 13.1% increase compared to the same month in 2019 , prior to the pandemic.

Rodríguez Zamora emphasized that the performance reflects the growing interest in the country's cultural heritage. “We begin this World Cup year with good news that confirms that Mexico is a living culture. Our ancient history, our museums, and our archaeological sites are an essential part of who we are and what we show to the world,” he noted.

During the same period, the country's archaeological sites received 975,711 visitors , of which 58% were national and 42% foreign , exceeding by 1,327 visitors the figure recorded in January 2025.

Among the museum venues with the highest attendance during the month were the National Museum of Anthropology , the National Museum of History – Chapultepec Castle and the Templo Mayor Museum , which together totaled 889,009 visits .

Meanwhile, the archaeological sites with the highest number of visitors were Chichen Itza , Teotihuacan with Site Museum and Tulum , which concentrated 492,939 visitors , equivalent to 51% of the national total .

The head of the Ministry of Tourism emphasized that these results reflect the interest of both national and international audiences in learning about the country's rich history. "These figures not only reflect confidence in Mexico as an attractive destination, but also pride in our roots and a growing interest in experiences that connect with history, art, and identity," she concluded.
