The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects that global demand for air travel will double by 2050, consolidating a trend of sustained growth driven by economic expansion, the rise of the middle class, and greater international connectivity. This scenario positions aviation as one of the key sectors for long-term global mobility.

Growth will be primarily driven by the Asia-Pacific region, which will continue to gain market share in global traffic, followed by emerging markets in Africa and Latin America. Meanwhile, the mature markets of Europe and North America will maintain a more stable trajectory, although they will remain relevant in terms of volume.

The organization points out that this increase in demand will pose significant challenges for the industry, particularly regarding airport infrastructure, operational capacity, and aircraft availability. Added to this are factors such as fuel costs and the need to advance the decarbonization of the sector, in line with the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

IATA also warns that the projected growth will require greater coordination among governments, airlines, and ecosystem stakeholders to ensure efficient and sustainable development. Investment in technology, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), and modernization of air traffic management will be key to supporting this expansion.

In this context, the projection towards 2050 not only reflects the growth potential of air transport, but also the need for strategic planning to sustain a demand that will continue to rise globally.
