The Government of Mexico, through the Ministries of Tourism (Sectur) and Foreign Affairs (SRE), announced that our country has been designated as the venue for the Fourth World Congress of Sports Tourism, organized by the network of Affiliate Members of UN Tourism from different countries.
This appointment represents a historic milestone, as it is the first edition of the Congress to be held outside of Europe, following its editions in Spain (2021 and 2024) and Croatia (2023).
Mexico's selection reaffirms its commitment to the sports tourism policy that generates Shared Prosperity and goes against violence; it also confirms its position as a competitive destination, with infrastructure, talent and capacity to host world-class events.
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, emphasized that this meeting will allow Mexico to position itself as a global benchmark in sports tourism, while also promoting the arrival of new investments, the attraction of international events and the generation of strategic alliances that benefit the country's production chains.
“Hosting this World Congress is an opportunity for Mexico to showcase its greatness to the world, but above all, for tourism to translate into well-being for Mexicans. Sports tourism not only attracts visitors, generates investment, and boosts our local economies, but it also opens up opportunities, promotes employment, and strengthens our communities,” he emphasized.
He emphasized that this meeting will position Mexico as a global leader in sports tourism, while also encouraging new investments, attracting international events, and generating strategic alliances that benefit the country's production chains.
In his remarks, the head of the Intersectoral Coordination Unit, Alfonso Zegbe, emphasized: “UN Tourism is a key international organization that combines the representation of countries with the private sector and associations. It is pioneering because it goes far beyond governments: it reaches businesspeople, organizations, and academia; but, most importantly, it delivers results.”
Similarly, the role of the Mexican Embassy in Spain, in its capacity as Permanent Representative of the country to that organization, was highlighted.
For his part, the president of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (CONCANACO SERVYTUR), Octavio de la Torre, stated that, “in a key year for Mexico in the eyes of the world, sports tourism can become a true lever for development for destinations, the local economy and family businesses.”
The announcement was formalized through the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Mexico and UN Tourism for the celebration of the Congress, with the participation of representatives of CONCANACO SERVYTUR, an organization that is part of the Affiliate Members of UN Tourism, who, in that capacity, promoted Mexico's candidacy as the venue for the Congress, as well as its follow-up.
This Congress will not only strengthen Mexico's image as an international tourist destination, but also bolster the country's actions in public and sports diplomacy.
Also present at the announcement was the general director of the Mixed Fund for Tourism Promotion of Mexico City, Carlos Martínez Velázquez.
