The Sustainable Skies World Summit reaffirmed the joint commitment between governments and industry to advance towards more sustainable aviation, highlighting concrete progress on the path to net-zero emissions. Over two days, the event focused on the practical implementation of solutions, bringing together key industry stakeholders, policymakers, and sustainability experts.
Throughout the summit, the main challenges of the industry were addressed with an execution-oriented approach, including immediate regulatory and operational requirements, the reality of the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) market, financing and investment mechanisms, carbon offsets and removal, non-CO2 emissions, and the development of next-generation technologies such as hydrogen aviation.
One of the most significant announcements was the update to the UK's Jet Zero strategy. Keir Mather, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonization, presented the first annual report from the task force, highlighting significant progress in decarbonizing air transport. Key measures include the SAF mandate, in effect since January 2025, which requires suppliers to blend 2% sustainable fuel, with a target of reaching 10% by 2030, sending a clear signal to the market to accelerate its production and adoption.
The British government also detailed the implementation of an income certainty mechanism to incentivize private investment, along with the allocation of £63 million through the Advanced Fuels Fund in 2025.
In parallel, the Sustainable Aviation organization announced a £2 million initiative called “Advanced Market Signal,” aimed at boosting the greenhouse gas removal market. Through this program, industry members committed to purchasing carbon removal credits, supporting the development of a market that could require between 20 and 30 million tons annually by 2050.
During the event, Matt Ridley, Oneworld's Director of Sustainability and Innovation, emphasized the sector's importance to the global economy and the need to reduce its environmental impact. He also highlighted the value of the gathering as an inspiring forum for sharing ideas and moving towards a more sustainable future for aviation.
With a program that included conferences, panels and workshops, the summit not only showcased progress, but also aligned priorities and objectives that will define the future of aviation globally.
