Malta transforms during the European summer into an irresistible destination for those in search of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. “Malta, together with Gozo and Comino, is a year-round destination, with more than 300 days of sunshine annually,” says Buttigieg, North America representative of the Malta Tourism Authority.

She highlights that the country seamlessly blends crystal-clear beaches, world-class diving, and vibrant water sports with “over 8,000 years of history, a dynamic culinary scene, and a rich calendar of cultural events and festivals that captivate visitors from around the world.”

Lesser-explored islands offer unique experiences

To ease the pressure on its most popular areas, Malta is investing in year-round itineraries. “Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for swimming, diving, and yachting, allowing visitors to experience the islands at a more relaxed pace,” Buttigieg explains.

The island of Gozo, smaller and more tranquil, stands out for its authenticity. “Gozo invites a slower pace of travel, with a focus on sustainability and local traditions, keeping thousands of years of history alive,” she notes. Home to prehistoric temples such as Ġgantija and mystical landscapes linked to the legend of Calypso, Gozo is an invitation to slow down and savor every detail.

A welcoming and inclusive destination

Beyond leisure tourism, Malta is also a sought-after destination for international students and travelers of all backgrounds. “The country is a rich blend of cultures and influences, making it open, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone,” says Buttigieg.

She also underscores Malta’s leading position in the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Index, reflecting the country’s strong commitment to inclusion. “This openness, combined with the widespread use of English, a remarkable historical heritage, and high-end hospitality, makes Malta a truly accessible and democratic destination,” she adds.

Sports and outdoor adventures

Summer in Malta is also synonymous with energy and activity. “We offer exceptional conditions for sailing, diving, and water sports, along with international events that attract visitors from all over the world,” Buttigieg notes.

Highlights include music festivals such as Isle of MTV, Summer Daze, and the Malta Jazz Festival, as well as the prestigious Rolex Middle Sea Race and the traditional village festas, featuring parades, music, and fireworks. “These events create a unique, vibrant, and immersive atmosphere that is not to be missed,” emphasizes Michelle Buttigieg.

Connectivity and immersive experiences

Looking ahead to 2026, Malta is focusing on sustainable tourism and memorable experiences. Gozo stands out for travelers seeking authenticity and a slower pace. “The island offers a charming contrast to more traditional Mediterranean itineraries, allowing visitors to enjoy a truly authentic and relaxing experience,” says Buttigieg.

The destination is also becoming more accessible with Delta Air Lines’ new direct route from JFK to Malta, operating from June 7 through October 23. “This enhanced connectivity makes it easier for North American travelers to reach the islands, making the overall experience even more seamless and enjoyable,” she concludes.
