The Palm Beaches tourist destination has been officially designated as the “Sea Turtle Capital of Florida™”, an accolade that highlights its leadership in sea turtle nesting, environmental conservation and responsible coastal tourism development.

The announcement was made by Discover The Palm Beaches (DTPB), the destination's promotional agency, which emphasized the ecological importance of its 47 miles of coastline. Every year, between March and October, this coastal strip becomes one of the world's most important nesting habitats for seabirds.

The Palm Beaches have the highest number of loggerhead sea turtle nests per mile in the United States, contributing to the hatching of approximately 2 million hatchlings annually. The region is also home to other species such as the green and leatherback sea turtles, favored by unique natural conditions, including its eastward orientation and proximity to the Gulf Stream.

This privileged environment not only positions the destination in environmental terms, but also fosters a tourism offering based on education, conservation, and direct experience with nature. Among the main activities are visits to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, where visitors can learn firsthand about the sea turtle rehabilitation process.

Additionally, guided night walks and hatchling releases are offered at centers such as Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, providing a unique experience during nesting season.

The destination's conservation model is based on collaboration between public agencies, environmental organizations, and the local community. Throughout the year, nest monitoring, chick protection, and awareness programs are implemented to minimize human impact.

In addition, there are specific regulations that include controls on coastal lighting, beach furniture, navigation, and legal prohibitions to prevent disturbance of nests and turtles.

The destination emphasizes that this recognition not only highlights the local biodiversity but also reinforces its commitment to sustainable tourism. In this regard, visitors and residents are actively encouraged to adopt responsible practices, such as keeping beaches dark and quiet at night, to preserve these ecosystems.

With this positioning, The Palm Beaches consolidates itself as an international benchmark in the integration between tourism and conservation, offering a proposal where environmental protection and visitor experience converge in a long-term sustainable model.
