The growing presence of women in leadership positions within the World Travel Market (WTM) portfolio has contributed to changes in how strategic decisions are made in the tourism and events industry, according to Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM). In an interview with Travel2Latam, the executive states that diversity in leadership teams broadens the scope of discussions and directly influences the formulation of more comprehensive strategies.

“The strong female presence in leadership reflects a positive shift across the sector. It’s not just about representation, but about the value of diverse perspectives in decision-making,” says Curtis. According to her, more balanced teams tend to consider a broader set of factors, including sustainability, innovation, and the demands of different stakeholders, such as destinations, companies, and travelers.

Curtis also links this movement to a structural transformation of the sector. According to the executive, diversity contributes to a more open and adaptable industry, as well as encouraging the development of new leaders. "This helps shape a more future-oriented industry and inspires the next generation to see leadership as something accessible," she says.

In the context of the Arabian Travel Market, held in Dubai this year from August 17–20, Curtis points out that the event occupies a specific position within WTM's global portfolio, reflecting the accelerated growth of the Middle East as a tourism hub. In recent decades, the region has expanded investments in infrastructure, aviation, and hospitality, a trend reflected in the profile of the exhibitors and the scope of the event.

“ATM connects one of the fastest-growing regions in global tourism with the international industry,” she states. According to her, the event brings together everything from regional destinations to airlines, hotel chains, and technology companies, including expanding segments such as luxury tourism and digital solutions. Curtis also highlights the increased interest from markets like Africa and Asia, driven by investments in air connectivity and infrastructure.

Recent geopolitical instability in the Middle East led to the decision to reschedule the event for August. According to Curtis, the measure was taken with a focus on security and business continuity. "The change allows us to maintain the value delivered to the industry and adapt our approach to engage audiences in key markets," he states.

She emphasizes that the event maintains dialogue with entities such as the Dubai World Trade Centre and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism to monitor the situation and ensure operational standards. Despite the regional context, Curtis believes that Dubai and the United Arab Emirates remain stable centers for tourism and events, supported by infrastructure and international connectivity.

For the next edition, ATM plans to maintain its structure based on the exhibition area, but with an expansion of initiatives focused on generating business and exchanging knowledge. The program includes conferences distributed across different stages, focusing on trends, technological innovation, and growth strategies, as well as networking and matchmaking sessions.

“The event has evolved into a multifaceted platform that combines content, connections, and business opportunities,” says Curtis. Among the initiatives are areas dedicated to technology, such as ATM Travel Tech and the Tech & Innovation Zone, as well as digital tools that allow for the pre-scheduling of meetings between buyers and suppliers.

According to the executive, the participants' profile is primarily composed of decision-makers with purchasing power, which contributes to a results-oriented environment. "There's a combination of diversity and clear commercial intent, which generates more relevant interactions and partnerships with measurable returns," she says.

The theme of the next edition, “Travel 2040: Driving New Frontiers Through Innovation and Technology”, should guide discussions on the impact of technology on the traveler experience and the operational efficiency of the sector. Among the topics planned are artificial intelligence, mobility, sustainability, and digitalization.

According to Curtis, the advancement of digital tools, such as matchmaking platforms and innovation solutions, tends to consolidate ATM's role as a strategic connection point for global tourism. "Technology allows the industry to connect and conduct business more efficiently, expanding the value generated for all participants," he states.

In the current scenario, marked by structural transformations and geopolitical challenges, the executive believes that events like the Arabian Travel Market tend to reinforce their relevance as spaces for business networking and development, keeping pace with the evolution of the industry and its demands for innovation and global integration.
