Brightline, the leading operator of modern intercity trains in the United States, commemorated Earth Day by highlighting significant progress in sustainability, emissions reduction, and the development of cleaner mobility solutions in Florida. Through efficient rail technology, sustainably designed stations, and strategic partnerships, the company is reinforcing its position as an alternative to individual transportation.
A cleaner way to travel
Brightline's rail service reduces CO₂ emissions by 75% per passenger mile compared to using private vehicles. During 2025, its 3.1 million passengers helped remove 2.3 million cars from Florida's roads, preventing the emission of approximately 659,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually—the equivalent of planting more than 3 million trees.
Sustainable infrastructure and operations
Brightline's environmental commitment encompasses both its facilities and its daily operations. At its maintenance center in Orlando, the automated train washing system uses 78% recycled water combined with rainwater. In addition, the stations feature touchless water dispensers that have already prevented the use of more than 618,000 plastic bottles.
The trains and terminals incorporate touchless hygiene systems that reduce water consumption and eliminate the use of up to 73,000 paper towels per year. At the Orlando station, the PREMIUM and SMART spaces are built with recyclable materials, while the Aventura station was designed to LEED Gold standards, incorporating solar energy and water-efficiency technologies.
In turn, the company promotes the reduction of single-use plastics by using biodegradable straws and distributing reusable cups among its staff, complemented by recycling systems in all its facilities.
Low-emission rail technology
Brightline's trains meet the most stringent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and run on biodiesel, a renewable fuel that significantly reduces pollutant emissions. Developed in partnership with Siemens, each unit features state-of-the-art diesel-electric engines, certified under Tier 4 regulations.
Integrated and efficient mobility
Brightline's model relies on integration with other modes of transportation, including bike-sharing systems, ride-sharing services, and electric scooters. Its stations, located in strategic urban areas, facilitate connections with networks such as Metrorail, Metrobus, and Metromover, promoting the use of public transportation and reducing dependence on cars.
Brightline Florida CEO Patrick Goddard highlighted the impact achieved: “Brightline was conceived on the premise that transportation can be transformative and sustainable. On this Earth Day, we celebrate the results achieved alongside our passengers and teams, and reaffirm our commitment to developing clean mobility options in Florida and beyond.”
With these advances, Brightline consolidates its role as a benchmark in sustainable transport, demonstrating that efficiency and environmental responsibility can be integrated into the same value proposition.
