With a historic 50th anniversary edition, the Tianguis Turístico México 2026 kicked off in Acapulco with an agenda focused on strengthening the sector, attracting investment, and improving air connectivity.
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, led the official opening of the event, which included the Forum “Financing and investment in the tourism sector in Mexico: public policy and alliances to promote its development”, in addition to the inaugural ceremony.
In this context, he announced the launch of a $150 million investment in new tourism projects, as part of a total portfolio of $42.452 billion included in the Mexico Plan. He explained that this figure reflects the sector's growth, with a 10% increase in the number of projects and a 16% increase in the amount of investment.
“Today we begin a new era for tourism in Mexico, with investments that generate well-being, regional development, and new opportunities. This portfolio reflects confidence in the country and the coordinated work between the public and private sectors,” he emphasized.
Investments are concentrated mainly in ten states —including Quintana Roo, Nayarit, Jalisco and Baja California Sur— although the rest of the country also registers projects, which shows a territorial expansion of tourism development.
One of the key themes of the event was air connectivity. In this regard, four airlines announced new routes and operational expansions. Aeroméxico confirmed new international routes and the consolidation of the Mexico City–Barcelona flight as a regular service. Mexicana de Aviación will add a new route to Acapulco, reaching 19 destinations. Viva will incorporate domestic and international connections from AIFA, while Volaris projects the opening of 35 new routes in 2026, reaching a total of 259.
During the forum, strategic tools to boost tourism investment were also presented, such as the Tourism Investment Guide —developed together with UN Tourism and CAF—, a portfolio of priority projects and a ten-point plan aimed at promoting sustainable investments.
The official opening was attended by national authorities, governors, representatives of the private sector and international organizations, in a meeting that highlighted the collaboration between the different actors in the industry.
On behalf of the Mexican government, the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, emphasized the commitment to tourism development and Acapulco's recovery as a key destination. She also underscored the country's strategic value based on its natural, cultural, and gastronomic wealth.
The return of the Tianguis to Acapulco —the event's original venue in 1975— marks a milestone in its history and reinforces its position as Mexico's main platform for tourism promotion and marketing.
“The Tianguis Turístico México 2026 not only celebrates 50 years of history, but also represents a new stage for the sector, with a renewed vision and a commitment to continue positioning Mexico as a global tourism powerhouse,” concluded Rodríguez Zamora.
