The Central American country continues working to impose itself as a regional leader promoting its destinations in the most important events
In addition to being characterized by its warmth and cultural traditions, this destination is internationally recognized for its biodiversity, of which 5% of the global amount can be found here. Costa Rica, pioneer of the concept of ecotourism, has become one of the most visited destinations in Central America, by lovers of adventure, thanks to the beautiful landscapes of great natural intensity. Mountains, valleys, volcanoes, beaches, lakes, caves, forests, national parks, springs, hot springs and innumerable species of fauna and flora are just some of the natural options available for tourists to enjoy during their visit. 26% of the national territory is protected, and given the wealth it has in the wild, the National System of Conservation Areas protects wild areas and national parks in the country, with the objective of preserving natural resources; sources of life and generators of tourism.
In addition, Costa Rica is a pillar of sustainable tourism, an economic activity that respects the environment, causes the least possible impact and is friendly with the social and cultural environment of the country. Since 1997, ICTs have implemented the Certification for Sustainable Tourism, a standard recognized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as a pioneering program that has managed to change the course of tourism. Every day, more hosting companies, tour operators, car rental companies and theme parks express their explicit commitment to the sustainable management of their businesses, through specific actions such as the proper management of waste, the rational use of resources, the protection of the environment, respect for the local culture and contribution to the communities. The development model of sustainable tourism promoted by Costa Rica, which is the basis of the positioning of the country and its destination brand, is based on social and economic development and the conservation of the natural and cultural wealth of our country. According to the World Economic Forum, Costa Rica ranked 42nd worldwide and sixth in Latin America in the 2015 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report.
Costa Rica formalized a Neutral Carbon Country Program on June 19, 2012. The Program recognizes the protection of forests, biodiversity and water resources; the mitigation of greenhouse gases, and more.
IMEX - Frankfurt received last year the greenhouse gas emission compensation unit certificate through the purchase of 5303.19 tons of CO2 equivalent generated in the Caribbean Project, for an amount of US $ 39,773.95.
The PES (payment for environmental services) is financed mainly by financial compensation granted by the Costa Rican Tourism Board through FONAFIFO to forest owners and forest plantations for the environmental services they provide that have a direct impact on protection and improvement of the environment.
The PES Program, in combination with other actions of the Government of the Republic, has made it possible to achieve objectives that have had a positive impact on:
-Reduce deforestation rates.
-Recovery of forest cover and degraded lands.
-Combatir the illegal logging of forests efficiently.
-Promote production and non-traditional exports, and take advantage of potential markets.
-Promote the forest industry.
-Contributing to rural development.
-Contribute to national strategies against poverty
-Contribute to the fulfillment of the global environmental objectives.
