With a population of 3.3 million, more than 2 million people visited the country during the first half of the year, a promising figure for Uruguayan tourism
In 2018, Uruguay works to maintain and continue to be the only country in Latin America to exceed the number of foreigners in terms of the number of inhabitants in the country. In December of last year, the Eastern Republic exceeded 4 million tourists, marking a milestone for Uruguayan tourism. Although the economic changes of neighboring emitting countries could affect the final number, the Minister of Tourism works hard to overcome the record again and in the first semester there was already an interannual increase of 1.7%.
In this first half of the year, Montevideo was consolidated as the most chosen by travelers, with a total of 485,432 visitors, followed by Punta del Este, in second place. Salto and the thermal region, remained for the fourth consecutive year in the third place, increasing by 1% the arrival of tourists to the region.
This positioning of the destination is not only due to recreational tourism, but also thanks to the arrival of foreigners due to the number of important events held in Charrúa. According to the data provided by the Ministry of Tourism of Uruguay, it is expected that by the end of 2018 the past figures will be exceeded, executing 246 meetings, of which 54 would be international, 39 regional and 153 national.
The diversity of destinations, short distances, the quality of hotel and gastronomic services and the economic benefits dedicated especially for foreigners make Uruguay, against all odds, continue to be one of the strongest and most competitive countries in the Latin American region. In any case, the Ministry of Tourism of Uruguay considers that being alert to situations in neighboring countries will be vital when planning strategies.
