The WTTC revealed that 49.6% of the GDP of the tourism sector in the Mexican Caribbean comes from tourism and 37.7% of the work spaces accounted for belong to this industry
The government of Quintana Roo informed that Cancún occupies the first place in the world in percentage participation of the Tourist GDP, and in generation of jobs in this field, according to a study presented by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in Spanish). English).
The body chaired by the Mexican Gloria Guevara revealed that 49.6% of the GDP of the tourist pole of the Mexican Caribbean comes from tourism, and 37.7% of the work spaces accounted for in 2017 belong to this industry, with about 148 thousand 300 jobs, in Quintana Roo.
According to the WTTC, Cancun is the most important tourist city and, although its activity is mainly focused on the entertainment sector, it also has a significant percentage of business services. However, the demand is set by its main markets: the United States and Canada.
For his part, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín, said "We have had achievements in Quintana Roo, like this positioning worldwide, but still insufficient and we are going for more, so that tourism generates more benefits for people".
The state leader said that public policies have been reoriented so that these new investments consolidate Quintana Roo as a regional tourist power to provide services to a population that grows, in some places, at a rate of 30% per year.
The study, prepared by the WTTC, was carried out in the 72 main cities of the world that concentrate 45% of tourism. Cancún is followed by Marrakech with 30.2% and Macao with 29.3%. In addition, 50 of these destinations make a greater direct contribution to the total GDP of travel and tourism, compared to their national average.
